Mila

When I wake to sun streaming in through the light cotton drapes, it’s with an icy sliver of dread slipping through my veins. It’s like waking from a nightmare I can’t recall having. My hands are shaking and my heart pounds. It takes several deep breaths before I feel more grounded.

Niko is sleeping next to me, emitting what sounds like a steady growl. That makes me smile. My big Russian bear is so relaxed, with an arm flung casually over his head. I’ll bet he doesn’t sleep this deeply very often. It must be the sea air. Either that, or he’s content because I’m lying next to him. I much prefer that idea.

Reaching over to the nightstand, I grab my cellphone. When I switch it on there are, as I might have expected, dozens of messages from my father.
